Unsure as to what our day had in store for us weather wise
we decided just to play it by ear. Our
first stop along Hwy 1 was Hearst Castle.
I had received mixed reviews
about whether it was worth the money to see.
We have both concluded that the drive up there and the castle including
the grounds were indeed worth the 25 a head.
After leaving the castle we were still debating whether or
not to hotel it or chance it and camp. So far most of our spats seem to happen
when we are driving. Mike likes to have
an address and know exactly where we are going and how long it will take us; me
on the other hand will just drive in the general direction and check out the
map a few times. I admit his way is much
more efficient. So at this point Mike
was going crazy not knowing where we were going, so in a panic I try to hurry
and figure it out. Picture this, me in
the front seat with so many bags at my feet I can only keep one foot down at a
time with two maps on my lap, the campground book, both our cell phones and
Naggie. I don’t know how but we made it
to Kirk Creek campground in Big Sur. Now
did we stay here…… No. It was almost
full and very windy up on the bluff. We
thought we had scored with the perfect site; it had a little cove to protect us
from the wind and the rain that was on its way.
Sure enough as soon as we set up our tent the ranger came by to tell us
that was already taken. We had two
choices one open on top of the bluff with the gusty winds and dark gray clouds
on their way or go check out the campground we already passed. On the road again it was! The campground was perfect, tucked away in
the woods a bit but the ocean was just across the street. While Kirk Creek had some million dollar
views, I am glad we went to Plaskett Creek Campground; we stayed warmer but
still were able to walk to the coast.
The rain did come but this time we were better prepared with a tarp and
everything packed away. The drive up the
1 is so amazing!! A few turns but each
side of you just takes your breath away!
A rocky coast with aqua blue water on one side and green hills on the other
side, if you have the chance make the dive you will not regret it!
on our way to the coast |
love the rolling green hills |
We think Ireland will look something like this |
Nature does cool stuff:) |
Love how the fog just sits |
What a view from the castle |
can you imagine all the people I could have over |
knuckles to the little guy |
we think we are fun:) |
Wish I could have gone for a swim!! |
What a front door!! |
If you don't like swimming outside you can always come in. |
Just a little place |
on a little hill |
Just down the way from the castle the beach is lined with seals!! |
so sweet |
love to play |
this was the right choice for us:) |
This time we are ready for the rain |
but till then we will walk to the beach |
So glad you guys got to do highway 1. Right after Jeff and I got married we moved down to Vandenberg, we drove most of highway 1 in the dark, I was in tears because all of the (non skeezy) hotels were full, and we ended up sleeping in the trunk of my little white corolla. When we woke up we found we were at a scenic turn off and there was a ton of gorgeous fog over the coast, it was amazing (and a great start to living in CA for 9 months).
